Types of Print Media Advertising

Print media advertising is physically printed media including newspapers, magazines, posters, flyers, billboards and direct mail.

1) Newspapers and Weeklies

A wide range of newspapers are available for advertisers including local, regional and national titles published either daily, in the evenings, weekly or Sunday editions. Newspapers have a mix of content often including world, regional, local and national news, entertainment news, sports news, business news, fashion news and political news. This helps newspapers target a wide variety of readers with a varying taste for content. Advertisers can choose from a range of sizes of advertising space ranging from text only, classified ads, to larger display ads featuring pictures, text, graphics and illustrations in sizes that go up to a full page or sometimes even a two-page ad.

2) Consumer and Trade Magazines

Magazines often cater to a specific content topic and have a wide readership base to advertise to. Consumer magazines cater to a wide range of interests, including beauty, fashion, sports, technology, health, current affairs etc whereas business and trade magazines provide coverage of specific industries, such as finance or electronics. Others cover varied topics, such as entrepreneurship, human resources while still others focus on job-specific areas, such as publications for marketing professionals, software professionals or engineers. Typically, these magazines are published weekly, monthly or quarterly. Just like newspapers, advertisers can choose advertising spaces from classified ads to full pages.

3) Billboards and Posters

Advertising on billboards and posters gives advertisers the opportunity to reach out to consumers on the move. Displaying posters in retail spaces including malls helps advertisers reach consumers that are close to the point of purchase. Posters or billboards in train stations, airports or busy city centres have the potential to reach large groups of consumers. Advertisers can alter the messages displayed on billboards and posters as per their need.

4) Direct Mail – Letters, Brochures, Flyers

Direct mail usually includes letters, brochures or flyers sent via the postal service or a courier service. Advertisers use direct mail to reach out to a more local target audience. They usually send these to their own mailing list or pay for the services of a mailing list of a particular target group and send it to them.

5) Print Media Selection

Based on circulation and the readership nature, advertisers pay for space to reach out to the readership audience. Using circulation figures and readership research from individual media or industry groups advertisers can compare costs and make an analysis of who to advertise with and how much space to book according to their budget.
